A woman who vanished in Arizona 32 years ago has been found alive, according to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.

Christina Marie Plante was 13 years old when she disappeared in May 1994 from the community of Star Valley, Arizona, located near the Payson area. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office announced on April 1, 2026, that Plante’s identity has been confirmed and her status as a missing person has been officially resolved.

Disappearance and Initial Investigation

Plante was last seen in May 1994 after leaving her home on foot to go to a stable where her horse was kept. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing tennis shoes, a t-shirt, and shorts.

Disappearance and Initial Investigation

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office classified her as missing/endangered and under suspicious circumstances. In the immediate aftermath, local law enforcement, regional resources, and volunteers conducted extensive ground searches, interviews, and investigative follow-ups. Despite these efforts, no viable leads were developed at the time.

Plante’s information was entered into national missing children databases, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), and missing persons posters were distributed throughout Arizona and across the United States.

Cold Case Breakthrough

The case remained open for over three decades, with investigators periodically re-examining evidence and pursuing new information. The breakthrough occurred after the Gila County Sheriff’s Office established a dedicated cold case unit focused on unresolved investigations.

Detectives in the unit used “advances in technology, modern investigative techniques and detailed case review” to develop new leads that “ultimately led to a breakthrough.”

Sheriff Adam J. Shepherd

Sheriff Shepherd noted that the resolution of the case demonstrates the importance of cold case review initiatives and the impact of evolving technology in providing answers to families and communities.

Officials have declined to release specific details regarding where Plante was found or the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office stated this decision was made to protect the privacy and well-being of the woman, who is now 44 years old.

Angeline Hartmann, director of communications at NCMEC, highlighted the significance of the recovery. Hartmann noted that between 2021 and 2023, 117 children were safely recovered after having been missing for 10 years or more.
