parts of​ the South‍ Island⁣ are expected⁢ to experience a wet and windy Christmas Day, according to‌ MetService. Heavy ⁤rain is‌ forecast for the West Coast, and gales are anticipated in Canterbury.

A front is moving ⁢northwards over the South Island and is expected to reach the ‌island into early Christmas morning. ⁢MetService reports that the front will then slow down around the‌ northern parts ⁣of the island.

Warnings‍ and Watches

Orange heavy rain ‌warnings are⁢ currently‌ in effect for the ranges⁤ in Buller, ⁣Westland, ⁣and Gray districts (from Arthurs Pass northwards), ‌and also the Canterbury Headwaters (also from Arthurs ⁢Pass northwards), beginning Thursday morning. Thunderstorms are possible.

Heavy ⁣rain watches have been issued for the Tasman District, the ranges​ of the Westland District (from Mount Cook to Arthurs Pass), and the Canterbury Headwaters‍ (also ​from Mount ​Cook ⁢to ⁣Arthurs Pass). ⁣‍ MetService indicates a moderate​ chance these watches will be upgraded to warnings.

A strong wind watch is also in place for the Canterbury High Country and near ‌the foothills until‌ 9:00 AM, with northwest‌ winds possibly reaching severe ⁢gale force​ in exposed areas, according ‍to MetService.
