Car Ban Set for Limerick’s Main Thoroughfare Ahead of Christmas
Limerick City and County Council plans to close a section of the city’s main thoroughfare to traffic on selected Sundays in December. The closures will occur around the Daniel O’Connell monument in the Crescent area on December 8, December 15, and December 22, from 12 noon to 6 PM.
The council aims to facilitate Christmas activities, although specifics on these activities are yet to be disclosed. This road closure follows a similar event that took place in August when access around the fountain was restricted.
Fine Gael councillor Sarah Kiely expressed concerns from local business owners, stating they fear a drop in trade during the critical festive season. She noted that closing the main thoroughfare might divert customers away from the city center, where shopping and activities are concentrated.
Conversely, Independent councillor Maria Donoghue supports the closure, saying it enhances the shopping atmosphere for visitors and sets a festive tone for the city.
The council will reveal its Christmas program on Wednesday, providing further details on planned activities.
