Universal Pictures Claims Studio Milestone
The film achieved this milestone during an eight-week theatrical run that began with a $124.5 million opening in July 2026.
NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley praised the production’s impact on the industry. What Chris and Emma [Thomas] have created will go down as one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history,
Langley said, describing the project as a generational event that galvanizes moviegoing itself.
Sustained audience demand for premium formats allowed Universal to extend the film’s IMAX 70mm screening window through September 2026.
Box Office Records and Studio Dominance
Beyond its studio record, The Odyssey stands as the highest-grossing film in Christopher Nolan’s career in both domestic and international territories. It also surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine to claim the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Powered by The Odyssey and titles including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Minions & Monsters, Disclosure Day, and Focus Features release Obsession, Universal Pictures crossed $5 billion in worldwide box office gross for 2026. The studio captured a 26 percent market share, becoming the first distributor to exceed $3 billion internationally and $4 billion globally within the calendar year.
