Graz, austria – Suffering, death, and grief, often associated with Good
Friday, are constant realities. To address these themes, the Evangelical
church in Graz, with support from other Christian denominations, has
organized two city walks under the motto “Broken Steps – steps of memory.”
Finding Space for Life’s Breaks
Pastor Sara Huber explained the reasoning behind the walks.”We deliberately
did not want to use the concept of the cross because we do not want to
compete with the conventional cross diagrams or even want to compete with
them,” Huber said. The organizers aim to provide a space to acknowledge
life’s disruptions.
“I can find out in and with my breaks through the joint pronouncement and
endure, by being heard and seen: I am not alone with it - and hopefully
we can heal a little together.”
Pastor Sara Huber
Huber emphasized inclusivity, stating, “Our motto is and just again this
time: we want to be the church with and for others.”
A Route Through Remembrance
The walks begin at the COVID-19 monument near the castle gate. The route
then proceeds to the parish church in Herrengasse, a site of protests a
decade ago.A short distance away, in kaiserfeldgasse, is the location
where a 23-year-old woman was fatally shot by her former partner last year.
The third station is the main square, a place of regular demonstrations
against injustice, oppression, and war, but also a site of mourning. The
final stop is at the city park cross.
