Singer Ciara recently shared a moving story about how her husband, NFL quarterback Russell Wilson, played a pivotal role in encouraging a 19-year-old leukemia patient to continue his treatment. Milton Wright, facing a dire prognosis, was initially ready to give up when Wilson intervened.
According to Ciara, Wright had been told he had only 12 hours to live after experiencing a severe adverse reaction to stem cell therapy. He was reluctant to continue the treatment, but a visit from wilson and a shared personal story changed his perspective.
A Father’s Fight
Wilson recounted the experience of his own father, Harrison Wilson, who was once given just 24 hours to live but ultimately survived for nearly two more years. Despite losing his ability to walk and see, Harrison Wilson “kept on fighting,” as Russell Wilson described it.
“I told Milton to keep fighting like my dad did,” Wilson wrote, sharing the impact of the conversation. This resonated deeply with Wright, who later decided to resume his treatment. Wright later achieved remission and is now dedicated to inspiring other young patients to pursue similar therapies.
Why Not You Foundation and a ‘Why Not You’ Attitude
Ciara and Russell Wilson co-founded the Why Not You Foundation, an institution dedicated to empowering youth to overcome adversity. Ciara emphasized the profound impact of their involvement, stating, “You talk about being able to be a part of saving someone’s life essentially, right? It’s such a gift.”
She further explained that the foundation promotes a “Why Not You” attitude, encouraging individuals to believe in their own potential, even when facing seemingly insurmountable challenges. “We’re just really big on encouraging people to have a ‘Why Not you’ attitude because we still have to tap into that ourselves,” Ciara added.
Emotional Support in Medical Crises
Milton Wright’s story highlights the crucial role of emotional support and personal connection in navigating medical crises. Wilson’s willingness to share his father’s difficult journey provided Wright with the courage to persevere. Now in remission, wright serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for other patients and their families.
