Despite the challenges of balancing work, family, and the demands of a theater company, there’s a palpable enthusiasm for taking the stage. In valladolid, hundreds of amateur enthusiasts transform into actors, directors, set designers, and lighting technicians each year, fueled by passion and dedication.
The Provincial Theater Exhibition, organized by the Diputación, celebrated its 41st edition last year with around twenty participating groups. The awards ceremony is scheduled for this Sunday at 19:00 hours in the Teatro Zorrilla. This artistic fervor across all age groups underscores the importance of theater in society, expanding and disseminating culture among the population. It is indeed, thus, necessary and even vital for the survival of the performing arts.
Representatives from the five winning Valladolid companies of the 2024 competition share this sentiment. They all agree that enthusiasm and passion are the driving forces for survival in a complex sector, where lack of time, limited funding, and, in many cases, the absence of venues or theaters in their towns present obstacles to performing on stage.
Spotlight on the Winning Theater Groups
Asociación Histórico-Cultural Buezillo: First-time Triumph
The Asociación Histórico-Cultural Buezillo clinched the first prize in their debut participation. While they have been organizing the historical reenactment about Wellington in Boecillo for nearly seven years, their theater group has been active for just under two years. The group consists of six actors and their director, Jonathan Martín.
Their winning piece, ‘El tratamiento’, was lauded by the jury for “the quality of the text and its possible adaptations, the staging, costumes, and direction of the production, as well as the work of the interpretation.” It is indeed an adaptation of a contemporary text addressing the Civil War.Martín envisions presenting the production at other festivals in Castilla y León and advocates for collective works “where all the people have a prominent role, that all enjoy and have a good time.”
Asociación María Luisa Ponte: A Legacy of theater
One of the largest, oldest (since 1996), and best-organized groups is the Asociación María Luisa Ponte from Medina de Rioseco. They secured the second prize with ‘Doña Rosita la soltera o el lenguaje de las flores’, directed by María Negro. Miguel Jerez, who succeeded Negro a few months ago due to professional reasons, highlights the 17 members participating in the adult group, along with the youth and children’s groups.
Jerez notes that “all who come participate in the work because in an amateur group everyone wants to have a good time,” making it challenging to find suitable texts to perform. Currently, they are preparing an adaptation of ‘San Juan’, Max Aub’s best dramatic work.
Jerez emphasizes the invaluable support from the Ayuntamiento, which finances all the technical, stage, and assembly aspects with its municipal budget and provides venues and the theater for operations.
Telonaria: Comedy with a Message
Villalón is another municipality with a theater group. Telonaria has been active since 2017 and won the third prize this year with ‘La banqueta’. Héctor Aparicio, president of the association, explains that they seek plays that make people laugh but also “leave a little residue, that has background, but without abandoning the comedy.” Santi and he, the two actors, are self-taught, and the group is completed by six other people who handle the technical aspects.
Aparicio states, “50 percent of the success of a performance is in a good text.” Therefore, they dedicate half a year to finding a good play “that makes you laugh, reflect, and has a message.” The Ayuntamiento provides them with a rehearsal space, but their funding comes from the performances of their plays. Their first play, ‘El crédito’ (2019), had almost 70 performances, and ‘La banqueta’ has already had nearly twenty since its premiere in December 2023.
Fragmentos Teatro: A Veteran group
Viana is another town with a long-standing theater group. With a history of 18 years, Fragmentos Teatro was awarded fourth place for the play ‘La piedra y el agua’, directed by José Antonio Cantalapiedra, who also authored the text. With about ten actors linked to Viana de Cega, the director indicates that “each year we prepare a play to premiere at the end of June or July as the main idea of the group is to have fun.”
Each October, the cycle begins again with their self-financing and a rehearsal space, the only assistance they receive from the Ayuntamiento.
El Racimo: A History of Awards
the cultural association El Racimo, from Serrada, will also receive the fourth prize (awarded jointly with Fragmentos) on Sunday for the production ‘El Rigoletto de Shakespeare’, directed by Alejandro espeso. Fran Pérez, the president of the association, says that the group was founded around the year 2000,and currently, there are about a dozen people who participate according to their availability due to work, family, and other circumstances. After 22 years of participating in the provincial exhibition, they already have several awards, including a first place in 2019 with ‘Luna de sangre’.
