Cinnamon and Drug Interactions: New Research Unveiled

A recent study from the National Center for Natural products Research suggests that cinnamaldehyde, a key component of cinnamon, could interfere with some prescription medications. The research, published in Food chemistry: Molecular Sciences, indicates that this compound activates receptors affecting how the body clears drugs, potentially reducing their effectiveness.
Shabana Khan, a principal scientist at the center, cautioned that consuming large amounts of cinnamon supplements without medical advice could lead to a rapid clearance of prescription medicines, diminishing their intended effects. While cinnamon has been used traditionally for managing blood sugar, heart health, and inflammation, its exact mechanisms in the body remain unclear.
According to Amar Chittiboyina, associate director at the center, the risk of herb-drug interactions is minimal with cinnamon oil, often used topically or as a flavoring. However,cinnamon bark,notably the Cassia variety common in grocery stores,contains high levels of coumarin,a blood thinner. Chittiboyina noted that true cinnamon from Sri lanka poses less risk due to lower coumarin levels.
Bill Gurley,a principal scientist and study co-author,emphasized the need for further clinical studies to fully understand cinnamon’s role in the body and potential drug interactions. He advised those considering cinnamon supplements to consult their doctors.
“People who suffer from chronic diseases — like hypertension, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, asthma, obesity, HIV, AIDS or depression – should be cautious when using cinnamon or any other supplements,” Khan said.”Our best advice is to talk to a health care provider before using any supplements along with the prescription medicine.”
