CIO’s Leap: From Financial services to Accruent’s Tech Transformation
A chief data officer’s journey from the highly regulated world of finance to driving innovation at Accruent.
After years in financial services, one IT leader sought a new challenge, believing his skills could benefit Accruent. His career path reflects a strategic move to leverage expertise in a different sector.
Clark, who earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Management from the University of Northern Colorado, began his career at Fiserv. There, he learned the critical importance of system availability. ”Fiserv, as the largest clearing firm in the U.S., provided a foundational understanding of financial services, banking, and wealth management,” clark said.He spent nine years at Fiserv, rising through the ranks from individual contributor to manager.
He then joined techfi Solutions, a startup later acquired by Advent Corporation, as director of professional services. This role involved identifying startup partnerships to enhance Techfi’s customer offerings. “Working for a startup taught me to build technology rapidly and provided early exposure to company management,” Clark noted. He oversaw back-office systems and customer support, navigating the challenges of a young, ambitious team.
His experience in financial services also meant dealing with regulatory agencies. “I understood the industry, the companies, and the systems, allowing me to connect the dots effectively,” Clark said. He focused on building stable and secure systems while streamlining business processes.
Clark’s career progressed to director, online advisor services at Ameriprise, followed by chief technology officer at Woodbury Financial Services. He then joined Wells Fargo as senior vice president, divisional information officer, gaining insight into large corporate operations. Before Accruent, Clark was senior vice president and chief information officer at LPL Financial.
Arriving at LPL Financial in 2016, Clark spearheaded the advancement of a new technology stack for financial advisors, enhancing back-office capabilities and contributing to the company’s growth. At Accruent, Clark applied his experience in connecting systems to integrate acquisitions and create an efficient back office.
Financial Services Expertise Applied to New Industries
While Accruent’s industry doesn’t have the same stringent requirements as financial services, Clark ensures 99.99% availability while managing costs and providing secure infrastructure.
“I wanted a new challenge and believed my skills could transfer. The culture at Accruent was different, efficient but not as fast-paced,” Clark said. “I knew I could add value instantly, though I’m still learning.”
Clark encourages others in his network to consider applying their skills to new industries. “Every technology decision aligns with the company’s mission and strategy,” Clark emphasized. “We focus on delivering value-added technology that drives growth and advancement.”
Continuous Upskilling
Clark values the constant learning required in his role. “I loved my time in financial services, but I appreciate waking up and not knowing everything,” Clark said. He aims to optimize workflows using technologies like RPA and AI, drawing from his financial services experience. He’s also focused on implementing chatbots and self-service capabilities to improve customer service response times.
At Accruent, the absence of heavy regulation allows for faster innovation. “We can be more innovative and quicker in delivering new technologies,” Clark said. “However, it’s crucial to thoughtfully deliver new capabilities to avoid overwhelming end-users.”
Clark believes that IT and business skills are transferable across industries. “My experiences have provided a different viewpoint on problem-solving,” Clark said. “CIOs should recognize that their skills and leadership experience are valuable in various sectors. Continuous learning is essential for a successful career.”
