Circular Furniture Transformation: Key Players Lead the Change
R-evolve Innovation Camp Drives Circularity in European Furniture
Published October 28, 2023
Copenhagen recently hosted the R-evolve Innovation Camp, a collaborative event bringing together key stakeholders from across the European furniture industry. The three-day camp focused on accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices, data utilization, and circular business models (CEBMs).
Participants centered their work around the Digital Product Passport (DPP), a crucial tool for enhancing product traceability, increasing transparency, and leveraging data for strategic advantage. The DPP is a key component of the European Union’s strategy for a more sustainable and circular economy.
Practical Workshops & Redesign Opportunities
The Innovation Camp featured intensive workshops where interdisciplinary teams analyzed existing furniture products too identify opportunities for redesign. Collaboration with industrial partners was central to developing more modular, repairable, and ultimately, circular solutions.
Evaluating Recovered Furniture Quality & Decontamination
TECNALIA Construction and Materials Laboratory’s Iker Hidalgo presented progress on Task 1.5, which focuses on methodologies and technologies for assessing the quality and decontamination of recovered furniture. This work is structured around two key subtasks:
- ST1.5.1: Evaluating existing methodologies for classification and decontamination, identifying gaps between economic feasibility and required quality standards.
- ST1.5.2: Developing practical guides for applying these methodologies and technologies to various types of recovered furniture.
The R-evolve Innovation Camp underscores the project’s commitment to the European Green Deal and the forthcoming regulation on sustainable design. This initiative actively fosters collaboration between policymakers, strategic planners, and industrial actors, positioning the European furniture sector for a more responsible, competitive, and circular future.
