Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is now a 1:1 transfer partner of Citi ThankYou, according to reports from Frequent Miler. The addition allows eligible cardholders to move points directly into the airline loyalty program, expanding travel redemption options for U.S.-based rewards members. According to Frequent Miler, the 1:1 transfer ratio applies specifically to holders of the Citi Strata Elite, Citi Strata Premier, Citi Prestige, and AT&T Access More credit cards. Over the past eighteen months, Japan Airlines has actively expanded its network of U.S. transferable partners, joining programs with Capital One, Bilt, and Rove.

Transfer Bonus and Redemption Rates

Alongside the partnership launch, Citi has introduced an extra 30% transfer bonus to Japan Airlines that runs through October 24th, as reported by Frequent Miler. This promotion increases the value of point transfers during the promotional window. Japan Airlines Mileage Bank features several redemption options for travelers. According to Frequent Miler, economy class awards to and from Japan start at 27,000 miles and approximately $200 one-way. Business class awards begin at 55,000 miles and about $214 one-way, while standard business awards require 80K miles. JAL provides expanded seat availability to its own loyalty members and permits booking 30 days prior to partner release dates.

Partner Awards and Program Restrictions

The Mileage Bank program maintains partnerships with Emirates and Air France-KLM Flying Blue, allowing members to book one-way business class awards to or from Europe starting at 60K miles, according to Frequent Miler. Surcharges on these routes are reported as under $100 to $150 for Emirates and under $10 for Air France when departing from the United States. However, the program carries strict rules for members. Frequent Miler notes that Japan Airlines Mileage Bank does not allow changes to ticketed award flights, though it charges a cancellation fee of 3,100 Japanese yen. Additionally, the program enforces a hard expiration policy where miles expire at the end of the month, 36 months after the date they were earned or transferred, with no option to extend validity. Members are also restricted to redeeming miles for themselves and immediate family members.
