Citizen Mobilization to Save Saint-Sauveur Church
Saint-Sauveur Church Sale Sparks Citizen Mobilization
Quebec City, Quebec – May 2, 2025 – Plans by ecclesiastical authorities to sell and repurpose the Saint-Sauveur church, a landmark in Quebec City’s Basse-Ville, have ignited a wave of citizen activism. Within 48 hours, a Facebook group, “save the Saint-Sauveur church,” has garnered over 50 members dedicated to preserving the historic structure.
Quentin Maridat, the movement’s founder, emphasizes the church’s significance extends beyond its religious function. He noted recent public funding was allocated to restore the church’s bell tower.
“The primary concern is the potential sale to developers who might convert it into condominiums,” Maridat said. “The frustration lies in the recent investment of public funds. It would be logical for it to remain a public asset.”
This mobilization occurs amid growing concerns over the loss of heritage buildings in recent years.
“The main objective is to amplify the voice of the community,” Maridat stated. “We know residents deeply value the bell tower.”
Accessibility Concerns
Maridat expressed fears of neglect, stating, “In the short term, we are afraid of outright abandonment.”
“Since Christmas, masses have been discontinued, and the church is closed, denying public access to this heritage site,” Maridat said. “If it were accessible, people could appreciate its grandeur and historical significance.”
Limited accessibility is a key concern. Maridat believes the Saint-Sauveur church could revitalize the neighborhood while preserving its historical integrity.
The group has engaged with Saint-Sauveur concertation to explore ways to represent residents’ desires for the future of the church on avenue des Oblats.
The parish of Sainte-Marie-de-l’Incarnation will reopen the Saint-Sauveur and Saint-Angèle-de-Saint-Malo churches this Sunday. masses will resume Sunday morning at both locations, and also Monday afternoon at Saint-Sauveur and Thursday afternoon at Saint-Angèle-de-Saint-Malo.
Irreplaceable Artworks
maridat highlighted the church’s unique interior, featuring irreplaceable murals and a Mitchell organ.
“The last time it was open was during christmas,” Maridat said. “The interior is splendid, with incredible spaces.”
