Trans and Intersex Pride Marchers Demand Better Healthcare and Recognition
Dublin, Ireland – Thousands gathered on Dame Street today for the annual Trans and Intersex Pride march, a vibrant display of solidarity and a powerful call for improved healthcare and greater societal recognition. The event, wich saw an increased turnout from previous years, highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by the trans and intersex communities in Ireland.
Labor TD Pledges Support and Announces Dáil Motion on Trans Healthcare
Labour TD Duncan Smith, speaking at the march, emphasized the party’s “full solidarity with the trans community.” He noted the growing size of the parade each year as a reflection of a “realisation that the trans community need proper allegiance, proper support.”
Smith announced that Labour will be introducing a motion on trans healthcare to the Dáil order paper in the coming week. “This will be the first motion on trans healthcare ever in the Dáil,” he stated, underscoring its importance.
He was critical of the current healthcare provisions, asserting, “The National Transgender Service isn’t fit for purpose for trans people and our health service needs to recognize that.” The proposed motion, he explained, aims to secure “what every citizen in this country should have….. healthcare in the community, GP-led healthcare, informed consult-led healthcare.”
Activists and Allies Unite for Global Trans Rights
The march attracted a diverse crowd, including international visitors keen to show their support.Logan Ferrante, a student from Georgia, US, participating in a three-week study abroad program, shared his motivation: “I thought it really vital to come here today to fight not only for Irish transgender rights but for the rights of all transgender people globally.”
Among the attendees was Ciarán O’Donnell, who was wearing a T-shirt bearing the message “Protect the Dolls.” He explained that the slogan was introduced in May as “a fashion statement to show your support and solidarity for trans people.”
The atmosphere was one of unity and determination, with participants carrying colourful banners and chanting slogans advocating for equality and acceptance. The annual march serves as a crucial platform for the trans and intersex communities to voice their demands and for allies to demonstrate their unwavering support.
