A by-election in Clacton has been formally triggered, following Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s resignation as the area’s Member of Parliament, according to reporting by the BBC. Reform MP Lee Anderson moved the writ in the Commons on Thursday morning, setting up a contest that Farage has billed as a “people versus the establishment” vote amidst ongoing parliamentary scrutiny over his financial interests.

Parliamentary Investigation and Financial Scrutiny

Questions regarding Farage’s finances emerged following a £5m gift he received prior to entering Parliament from Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based British cryptocurrency investor and major Reform donor, according to BBC coverage. Parliament’s standards commissioner is investigating whether Farage should have declared that sum upon becoming an MP in his published register of financial interests. Furthermore, The Sunday Times reported that Farage received support ahead of the 2024 election from George Cottrell, a political ally who served eight months in a US prison in 2017 after pleading guilty to a charge of wire fraud. Farage has denied any wrongdoing.

Political Opposition and Rival Candidates

Major political parties have declined to field candidates against the Reform UK leader. According to the BBC, the Labour Party, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Green Party, and Restore Britain have all ruled out contesting the Clacton seat. Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey urged Chancellor Rachel Reeves on Wednesday to refuse Farage’s resignation until the parliamentary inquiry concludes, writing on X that “the people of Clacton deserve the facts first.” Chancellor Reeves posted on X that the contest is a “farce and a desperate distraction,” noting that she would not stop him if he wants to “spend the summer arguing with a bin.”

That remark referenced serial election candidate Count Binface, who has announced an intention to run against Farage. Additional candidates entering the race include actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox, leader of the Reclaim Party who resides in nearby Peldon, and Adham Alkhatip, leader of the Forward Party, as reported by the BBC. Green Party MP Hannah Spencer described the contest to the BBC as “a farce of a by-election where one of the candidates is a joke character filled with rubbish and the other is Count Binface.”

Cost and Campaign Debates

Reform UK offered to cover the cost of the by-election, which is typically funded through central government resources, according to the BBC. However, the government rejected the offer, with the Prime Minister’s official spokesman stating that the law requires election costs to be met independently to maintain electoral impartiality. Reform UK’s Robert Jenrick defended the timing on LBC, stating that a by-election was inevitable and rejecting assertions that Farage acted cowardly by forcing an immediate contest rather than waiting for the standards commissioner’s findings.
