Clash of the Titans: Trump and Harris Go Head-to-Head in Fiery First Debate

September 12, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Trump Backs‍ 6-Week ⁤Abortion⁤ Ban in ⁤Florida, ‍Sparks Debate

Former President Donald Trump⁢ has reaffirmed his support for a⁣ 6-week ⁤abortion ban in⁢ Florida, a move that ‌is set to be put to a‌ vote in the state. This ⁢stance has sparked a heated debate, with Vice President Kamala Harris accusing Trump of pushing for ‍a nationwide abortion⁤ ban.

Trump responded to Harris’s claims, stating,⁣ “She lied again. I will not ‍sign the ban, and there‍ is no reason to sign the ban because we got what the people wanted,” referring to the Supreme Court’s ⁣overturning ⁣of Roe v.‍ Wade.

Tax Policy and Trade⁢ Wars

The debate also touched on tax policy, with Harris criticizing⁤ Trump’s China ⁣policy and accusing him of allowing the sale of microchips to China to ‌help Beijing build up its military. Trump countered that ⁤the US barely⁤ produces its own chips, largely due to ‌the policies of the Democratic administration.

Immigration and⁤ Border Security

Trump claimed that ”21‌ million people” were crossing⁤ the border into the ⁢US every month under President Biden, a statement that has been ⁤met with skepticism. Harris‍ has expressed support for legislation ‌aimed at ⁣strengthening border security, while Trump has criticized Democratic border policies, saying immigrants are ⁢”taking ⁢over towns…⁢ they‌ are coming in violently.”

Assassination Attempt and‌ Blame

Trump also made headlines⁢ by blaming Harris and others for an assassination attempt ‍in ⁢July, stating, “I probably ⁣got shot in⁤ the head ⁢because of ‌what they said about me. They said about democracy,⁣ ‘I am a threat to democracy. They are a threat ⁢to democracy.”

Mocking and Criticism

Harris ⁢took aim at Trump during the debate, saying “world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump.” She ⁤also mocked Trump’s denial that he lost the ⁢2020 election ‍and his⁤ claims ⁣that the court ⁢cases against him were a weapon of the Justice Department.

Ukraine⁢ Conflict‌ and Foreign Policy

Trump ⁢has vowed to end the⁣ conflict in Ukraine if he were president, stating that he would stop the conflict even before he ⁢was sworn in. Harris responded⁣ by⁢ emphasizing that Trump’s declaration ⁤would only end‌ the conflict because “he gave up.” She highlighted her own achievements in strengthening Western support for Ukraine,⁢ including bringing 50 countries together⁣ to support the ‍country.
