Cleveland Cavaliers’ Historic Start: Factors Behind Their Unbeaten Streak
The Cleveland Cavaliers are having a historic start to their season. They have broken the franchise record for the best start and are tied for the fourth longest winning streak to open a season in NBA history. They could potentially reach a 20-0 record by December if they win their upcoming game against the defending champions, the Boston Celtics, on November 19.
The Cavaliers have shown their strength by winning tight games, such as two close victories over the Milwaukee Bucks by a total of three points. They also recorded a significant 30-point win against the Toronto Raptors in their first match. This success is attributed to several key factors.
1. Excellent 3-Point Shooting
The Cavaliers are shooting 41.2% from the 3-point line, which ranks first in the league. While they only take 37.2 three-pointers per game (15th in the league), they have four players shooting over 36% on at least four attempts daily. Players like Isaac Okoro and Darius Garland contribute significantly to this success. Okoro’s shooting has improved from 29% in his rookie season to 48.5%, while Garland is shooting 44.9%.
Cleveland earns many wide-open 3-point shots, averaging 20.3 per game at a 49.6% success rate. This efficiency stems from drives and passes by Donovan Mitchell and Garland. With a strong emphasis on getting open looks, the Cavaliers are proving to be a threat from beyond the arc.
2. Evan Mobley’s Offensive Growth
Evan Mobley has also contributed to the Cavaliers’ success. Head coach Kenny Atkinson has given Mobley more freedom on the floor, allowing him to bring the ball up and run plays. Mobley’s ability to create mismatches has led to a notable increase in his driving statistics, nearly doubling his drives per game. He is currently averaging 7.8 drives per game, shooting 54.5% on these attempts. This evolution in his game adds another layer to Cleveland’s offense.
3. Increased Pace of Play
Under Atkinson, the Cavaliers have shifted to a faster pace. Previously, they ranked in the bottom half of the league regarding pace. However, they now rank 10th. This quicker tempo allows them to score efficiently and leverage Mitchell’s speed. Cleveland is focusing on making quicker decisions and forcing defenses to adapt, resulting in the second-best offense in the league.
With an unbeaten record and an overall strong performance, the Cavaliers look poised to challenge for a deep playoff run this season.
