Lake Erie Ice Coverage Nears Record Levels

Lake Erie is experiencing an unusually high level of ice coverage, reaching 94% as of February 3, 2026, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland. This figure significantly exceeds the average peak ice coverage of 65-70% typically observed on the Great Lake.

The near-total freeze comes after a prolonged period of record cold temperatures. It has been 30 years since Lake Erie was fully frozen – in February 1996.

The impact of the ice coverage extends to air travel. While conditions have largely returned to normal, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport experienced disruptions in late December due to winter storms. On December 24th, 2025, the airport saw 67 delays and nine cancellations as a result of inclement weather. By Monday, January 1st, 2026, operations had largely rebounded, with only one cancellation and eight delays reported, according to FlightAware.com.

Nationwide, winter storms caused significant travel chaos during the holiday season. The Transportation Security Administration reported screening a record 3,133,924 passengers on Sunday, December 29th, 2025, despite widespread flight disruptions. Across the United States, 218 flights were cancelled and 1,920 were delayed on Monday, January 1st, 2026, a marked improvement from the 1,028 cancellations and 12,889 delays experienced the previous Sunday.

Meanwhile, the City of Cleveland has stated there is no evidence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations within the city limits. The Cleveland Division of Police recently reviewed multiple reported ICE sightings but found them to be unfounded. The city clarified that while not federally mandated, they had not been notified of any immigration-related operations by ICE. Cleveland police also stated they do not inquire about a person’s immigration status during routine interactions with the public, focusing instead on public safety and responding to violent crimes.

The National Weather Service continues to monitor ice conditions on the Great Lakes, providing regular analysis and updates. The current conditions are a stark reminder of the power of winter weather and its potential impact on travel and daily life in the region.
