Latter-day Saints in northern Ohio are preparing for the dedication of the Cleveland Ohio Temple, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, according to announcements tracked by ChurchofJesusChristTemples.org. Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside over the dedicatory services at 10:00 a.m., with a rebroadcast scheduled for 2:00 p.m. to all units within the temple district.

Public Open House and Tour Schedule

According to ChurchofJesusChristTemples.org, public tours of the new facility will follow a series of media and private guest events. A media day is set for Monday, June 15, 2026, followed by two days of private tours for invited guests. The public open house will run from Thursday, June 18 through Friday, July 3, 2026, excluding Sundays.

Temple Location and Design Specifications

The temple is situated on an 11.04-acre parcel of property on Brecksville Road, south of Longano Drive, in Independence, Cuyahoga County, as reported by ChurchofJesusChristTemples.org. Plans for the site outline a single-story structure of approximately 9,000 square feet featuring a 100-foot spire, alongside a 2,200-square-foot ancillary building designated for a non-patron waiting area, restrooms, break room, and maintenance storage. The exterior utilizes a steel frame clad in glass-fiber-reinforced concrete, enclosed by an Ameristar fence.

ChurchofJesusChristTemples.org notes that the interior design incorporates motifs drawn from Cleveland’s historic architecture. Elements include the white trillium, Ohio’s state wildflower, as well as diamond patterns inspired by the Cleveland Trust Building’s art glass, the Cleveland Public Library ceilings, and the Terminal Building. Decorative frieze bands draw from Cleveland City Hall and the Cuyahoga County Court House. The color palette of blue, green, red, coral, and gold reflects the Lake Erie hillside at sunrise and East 4th Street. Carpet and area rugs for the facility were fabricated by manufacturers including Milliken of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Bentley Mills of City of Industry, California, and ShawContract of Cartersville, Georgia.

Historical Context and Regional Membership

President Russell M. Nelson initially announced plans for the Cleveland Ohio Temple during the April 2022 General Conference, as documented by ChurchofJesusChristTemples.org. Groundbreaking took place on Saturday, June 1, 2024, with Elder Vaiangina Sikahema, First Counselor in the North America Northeast Area Presidency, presiding over the ceremony. During the groundbreaking dedicatory prayer, Elder Sikahema stated, Holy Father, we stand here now nearly two centuries from those difficult days, blessed because Thy people followed the Prophet Joseph to this great land of Ohio. The new facility sits approximately 20 miles from the Church’s historic Kirtland Temple, which was dedicated in 1836 before ceasing operation as a temple a few years later. While Kirtland operates today as a Church historic building open for walking tours, the Cleveland temple will function as the state’s second operating temple, following the Columbus Ohio Temple dedicated in September 1999. ChurchofJesusChristTemples.org reports that Ohio currently has more than 63,000 Latter-day Saints across roughly 125 congregations.
