Birds, often considered highly adaptable due to their ability to fly, are struggling to keep pace with the rapid changes brought about by climate change, according to a new study. As global temperatures rise and ecosystems shift, many bird species are finding it difficult to relocate to cooler climates quickly enough.
The research,published in Nature Ecology and Evolution,analyzed the movements of 406 North American bird species over two decades,comparing their relocation efforts with local temperature changes.Jeremy Cohen, lead author of the study and associate research scientist at Yale University, noted the concerning trend. “They can’t move fast enough or far enough to keep up with how quickly climate change is occurring,” Cohen said.
The study revealed that during the summer months, bird species moved an average of 40 to 50 miles northward, sometimes reaching higher elevations. This movement helped them avoid about 1.28 degrees Celsius (2.3 degrees Fahrenheit) of warming. Though, they still experienced an average temperature increase of 1.35 degrees Celsius (2.43 degrees Fahrenheit) compared to their original home range. Winter months proved even more challenging, with birds experiencing a notable 3.7-degree Celsius (6.66 degrees Fahrenheit) increase, reducing their potential exposure by only half a degree through northward movement. This highlights the impact of climate change on bird relocation and the need for climate action.
The ability to escape higher temperatures also varied among species.While over 75% of birds managed to find slightly cooler areas, some, like the cactus wren, remained in their native habitats, making them more vulnerable to climate-related changes. These “climatic niche shifters” may face limitations in flight capability or struggle to compete in new environments due to specific habitat needs.
Bird species capable of long-distance flight, such as the blue-winged warbler, were more successful in limiting their exposure to warmer climates. These birds traveled over 100 miles northward and experienced two fewer degrees of warming than if they had stayed put. However, even these mobile species are facing temperatures higher than those they were accustomed to 20 years ago. The study underscores the challenges faced by even the most adaptable species in the face of rapid climate change and the importance of understanding bird migration patterns and climate change impacts.
“In a uniquely well-studied continental system, we find that even a highly mobile group, such as birds, is unable to relocate quickly enough to keep up with this velocity,” said Walter Jetz, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and director of the Yale Center for Biodiversity and Global Change.
