Ten Years After Paris Agreement: Progress Lagging, Urgent Action needed
The State of Climate Action 2025: A Critical Assessment
in the 10 years since the signing of the paris Agreement, the cornerstone of international climate action, humanity has made impressive strides. Renewable energy is increasingly affordable and reliable, and electric vehicles are improving annually.
However,by virtually every key metric used to measure progress, the world is still falling short of the targets needed to avert the most severe consequences of climate change, according to a report released on Wednesday by a coalition of climate groups. Time is running out to course-correct.
”all systems are flashing red,” stated Clea Shumer, a researcher at the World Resources Institute, one of the organizations involved in the report, during a press call last week. “There’s no doubt we are largely doing the right things-we are just not moving fast enough.”
Understanding the Paris Agreement and its Goals
The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees celsius, above pre-industrial levels by the end of this century. This aspiring goal requires important and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors of the global economy.
The State of Climate Action 2025 report assesses progress by examining 45 indicators across diverse sectors, including building electrification, coal usage in power generation, and global meat consumption.
Key Findings of the State of Climate action 2025 Report
The report paints a concerning picture: none of the 45 indicators measured are currently on track to meet the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. Here’s a breakdown of some critical areas:
| Sector | Current Status | Required Change to Meet 1.5°C Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Renewable Energy Deployment | Increasing, but not fast enough | Accelerate deployment by 3-6 times current rates |
| Coal Power Phase-Out | Slow progress; new coal plants still being built | Rapidly phase out all coal power plants by 2030 |
| Electric Vehicle adoption | Growing, but limited by infrastructure and cost | Increase EV sales to 60-80% of new car sales by 2030 |
| Building Electrification | Slow adoption of heat pumps and electric appliances | Electrify 75% of buildings by 2050 |
| Meat Consumption | globally, meat consumption continues to rise |
