COP16 ended yesterday in the city of Cali in Colombia, after more than ten hours of unfavorable discussions on financing the road map to save nature between now and 2030, as confirmed by the president of the summit Susana Muhamad.
“It has ended (…) the Colombian government made a great assembly, the Colombian people put everything in, there was a very good atmosphere, but in the end it depends on the parties and the negotiation process,” said Muhamad, with a tired face and watery eyes.
After more than 10 hours of discussions that lasted until dawn, the quorum was broken due to the absence of delegates who left for their hotels or to take flights back to their countries. Others slept in the plenary.
“Now we have to move on and work with what we have,” Muhamad added.
Nearly 200 participating countries did not meet the goal of increasing spending to $200 billion annually to implement the goals set at COP15, including protecting 30 percent of the world’s land and seas.
According to spokesman David Ainsworth, COP16 was only “suspended” and will resume at a date yet to be defined.
In this last edition, the European Union, Japan and Canada failed to reach an agreement with some of the developing world, led by Brazil and the African group.
The first refused to create a new fund for nature. The latter claimed that enthusiastically, claiming that the current funds were inaccessible and unequal.
