Clipperton Island: The Forgotten Castaway Kingdom of Madness

Located approximately 700 miles off the coast of Mexico, Clipperton Island exists as a remote ring of coral surrounding a stagnant lagoon in the Pacific Ocean. The island is uninhabited, lacking towns, airports and freshwater sources.
Throughout the late 1800s, France and Mexico both claimed ownership of the territory, driven primarily by the presence of valuable guano deposits. This territorial dispute continued for several decades until an international arbitration decision awarded the island to France in 1931.
The Mexican Settlement and Isolation
In 1906, Mexico established a small colony on the island, which included a lighthouse keeper and a military garrison. The survival of the settlement depended entirely on supply ships traveling from the Mexican mainland.
The stability of the colony collapsed following the eruption of the Mexican Revolution in 1910. As the conflict progressed, the essential supply lines to Clipperton Island gradually disappeared, leaving the inhabitants stranded without rescue.
Conditions on the island deteriorated as food became scarce and disease spread among the population. Several men attempted to find help by embarking on dangerous voyages, but they never returned.
By 1917, the population had dwindled to a small group of surviving women and children.
The Reign of Victoriano Álvarez
During this period of isolation, the lighthouse keeper, Victoriano Álvarez, declared himself the king of the island. With no remaining authorities to challenge his claim, Álvarez established a rule based on intimidation and terror.
Survivors described Álvarez as increasingly violent and unstable. He reportedly murdered, abused, and beat members of the small community while proclaiming himself the absolute ruler of the territory.
The survivors endured this reign for several months. The rule of Álvarez ended when one of the women, Tirza Rendón, killed him using a hammer.
Shortly after the death of Álvarez, a ship from the U.S. Navy arrived at the island and rescued the remaining survivors. Clipperton Island remains empty.
