Clipse’s ‘Let God Sort Em Out’ Rollout: Legacy Matters
Clipse’s “The Birds Don’t Sing”: A Raw Tribute to Parental Loss
The legendary duo Clipse, comprised of brothers Pusha T and Malice, have unveiled their deeply personal new project, Let God Sort Em Out, a collection that delves into profound grief and familial bonds. The brothers recently sat down with Big Boy on “Big Boy’s Neighborhood” to discuss the emotional weight behind their latest work, particularly the poignant track, “The Birds Don’t Sing.”
Pusha T Breaks Down the Meaning Behind “The Birds Don’t Sing”
Pusha T, known for his sharp lyricism, clarified that the album’s raw honesty wasn’t a calculated marketing ploy. “I wasn’t gonna, like, bring my brother and have him just sitting down with anybody either… This ain’t what we’re here for. This album wasn’t for that either,” he declared. This authentic approach is promptly evident on the album’s opening track, “The Birds Don’t Sing.”
The inspiration for the track, pusha T revealed, came from a deeply personal conversation with Pharrell Williams following the passing of their mother. “I remember one night, Pharrell [Williams was] calling me after my mom had passed, our mom had passed, and he was like, ‘…You gotta write about it.’ He was like, ‘I got this idea. It’s called the birds don’t sing; they screech in pain’… It came from a conversation we were having just about her and everything she was going through,” he explained to Big Boy.
The song itself is a powerful reflection on their mother’s life and struggles. Malice contributes his own poignant verses, recalling his final conversation with their father. The brothers tragically lost both parents within a four-month span, with their mother passing in November 2021 and their father in March 2022. Pusha T penned his lyrics and shared them with Malice, who admitted the impact was overwhelming. “I didn’t know how I was going to be able to finish ’cause just listening, I understood everything that he was saying… It like punched me in the face so hard.”
Clipse’s Emotional Performances of ”The Birds Don’t Sing” Reflect Deep Loss That Is Painful to Revisit
The live performances of “The Birds Don’t Sing” are undeniably charged with emotion, a testament to the profound loss the brothers have experienced. “It’s solemn every time you perform that. It’s definitely like,it’s solemn,” Malice shared about the experience. Pusha T added with a touch of dark humor, “People remind you that it’s solemn ’cause they be crying every time.”
Malice expressed a desire to move beyond performing the track, stating, “And then the pictures don’t help none. I hope we don’t have to perform that ever again.” The duo has delivered powerful renditions of the song, including their NPR “Tiny Desk” set and a particularly moving tribute on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” where a video montage of family photos served as a backdrop.
With Let God Sort Em Out, Clipse has powerfully demonstrated that genuine storytelling can still resonate deeply in today’s music landscape. The brothers are not chasing trends; they are honoring their legacy and the essence of Hip Hop through authentic and heartfelt music.
