Closed North Charleston Fire Museum Building Now Available for Event Rentals

More than seven months after the North Charleston Fire Museum closed its doors, city leaders are opening the facility near Tanger Outlets for rentals while officials debate its long-term future. The building, which cost more than $6 million to construct, recently hosted a nonprofit event following its closure in February. That shutdown occurred after collectors reclaimed loaned rigs, leaving the community attraction empty.

Mayor Reggie Burgess said the city has received inquiries from residents and local organizations interested in using the space for various gatherings, including fashion shows, music-related events, and meetings.

We’ve had people asking about fashion shows, people talking about music folks have in meeting areas, so we’re trying to use it until myself and city council make a collective decision on what will be the best use of it, Burgess said.

City officials noted that renting the facility allows the municipality to utilize the property and generate revenue while a permanent plan is developed. Councilwoman Nefertiti Brown, whose district includes the property, stated that nonprofits and members of the public can rent the space by contacting the city directly. Set rental rates apply specifically to nonprofit organizations.

Exploring New Opportunities for the Property

Councilwoman Stephanie Ganaway-Paslay urged the community to view the former museum as an asset rather than simply an empty municipal building.

There’s been discussion about what the building could be used for, because I think it’s simply more than just an empty building, Ganaway-Paslay said, calling it a building of opportunities.

Ganaway-Paslay pointed to the property’s advantageous location near Tanger Outlets as a prime chance to blend tourism with educational programming. She noted that visitors could learn more about North Charleston while residents gain access to a dedicated facility for community education and local programs.

According to city official Tony Tassarotti, only a handful of events have taken place at the building since the museum officially closed on Feb. 14. City leadership has not yet announced a final decision regarding the permanent function of the property.
