Ben Mohamed Embraces Esperance Role Ahead of Club World Cup
Ben Mohamed, currently in his second stint with Esperance, is preparing for the Club World Cup in Philadelphia. The former Bohemians defender, who rejoined the Tunisian side in 2024 after playing for French clubs Le Havre and Guingamp, as well as Denizlispor in Turkey, is now one of the senior players.
Mohamed’s journey back to esperance reflects a deep connection with the club. After initially leaving in 2019,he maintained close ties. “When I first came to Tunisia it was always with the view that I’d try to get back to Europe if I had the opportunity. But it was still a very difficult decision [to leave in 2019] and it took me a long time to make it,” mohamed said.
At 24, Mohamed sought to broaden his horizons and enhance his skills in Europe. “I was 24 and it felt like a good time to try something different and try to improve as a player.I had some great experiences in those five years but I always stayed in contact with Esperance,” he explained. The pull of Esperance proved too strong, and when the circumstances aligned last year, his return was an easy decision.
Playing two matches in Philadelphia, Mohamed anticipates a unique experience, especially given the city’s large irish American population. He believes many fans might potentially be surprised to learn of his Irish heritage. “People see my name and they just assume that I’m Tunisian,” Mohamed noted.
His appearance frequently enough leads to mistaken assumptions. “A lot of people would think I was Tunisian when I was in Ireland but here in Tunisia they call me ‘Irish’ because of the way I look,” he said. Mohamed added, “It surprises people because I look more Irish; I look a lot more like my mother than my dad. People expect me to have an Irish name and then they see ‘Ben Mohamed.'”
