CMAs 2023: Post Malone and Jelly Roll Beat Beyoncé – Shocking Wins and Highlights
The 2024 CMA Awards stirred controversy by snubbing Beyoncé while honoring Post Malone and Jelly Roll with nominations. The Country Music Association (CMA) indicated which artists would be accepted in the genre. Beyoncé’s album, COWBOY CARTER, received no nominations, while Malone and Jelly Roll performed multiple songs during the event.
Post Malone opened the show with “California Sober” alongside Chris Stapleton. While he was visible, many found it hard to hear him. Issues with the audio mix were suggested, but Malone struggled to match Stapleton’s strong voice. Stapleton outperformed him during the lengthier notes.
Jelly Roll faced challenges during his performance too. He recited a monologue from Ronnie Dunn’s song “Believe” awkwardly, seeming uncertain of his delivery. Dunn’s eventual appearance brought relief to the audience, as they connected more with his warm voice.
Malone’s solo performance of “Yours” became a low point of the night. Online criticism was harsh, and neither Malone nor the CMAs shared the performance on YouTube, possibly due to its poor reception.
Both artists may hope to genuinely embrace country music. However, the CMA’s history of gatekeeping raises doubts about their intentions. The CMAs have limited the definition of country music, ignoring many talented artists over the years, including Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson.
As the CMAs focused on maintaining exclusivity, they allowed standards of quality to slip. They created a narrower space for country music, leading to unsatisfactory performances and a decline in the show’s value. The CMA Awards, instead of celebrating quality, seem more concerned with control over the genre.
