Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Hosts Portuguese-Language Mass
The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston hosted a Portuguese-language Mass on Sunday, June 23, 2026, as part of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston’s outreach to visitors attending the FIFA World Cup. The service, held in the heart of the city’s growing Portuguese-speaking community, marked the first such Mass during the tournament, according to the Archdiocese.
The Mass drew an estimated 150 attendees, including Portuguese fans, expatriates, and local residents, according to Father João Silva, pastor of the church. “This is about making sure no one feels alone, even when they’re far from home,” Silva told reporters. “The World Cup brings people together, and faith can be that bridge.”
The Archdiocese has scheduled additional Portuguese-language services through July 15, aligning with the tournament’s final matches. Similar initiatives have been reported in other host cities, including São Paulo and Lisbon, where local churches expanded services for visiting fans.
Houston’s Portuguese-speaking community has grown significantly in recent years, with an estimated 50,000 residents of Portuguese descent, per 2024 U.S. Census data. The city’s role as a major World Cup hub has accelerated efforts to accommodate linguistic and cultural needs.
The Co-Cathedral’s initiative follows broader outreach by the Archdiocese, which has previously organized bilingual services for Spanish-speaking congregations. “We adapt to the needs of our community,” said Archbishop José Gómez in a statement. “This is how we live out our mission.”
The Mass was held at 3:00 PM local time, with a repeat service scheduled for 7:00 PM to accommodate late arrivals. Attendees included families with children, many of whom participated in the service’s youth section.
The Archdiocese has not yet confirmed whether additional languages will be introduced for future events, though Portuguese remains the primary focus for the tournament period.
