Coal India Dives Into Critical Minerals Exploration
Updated June 22, 2025
As the global demand for rare earths and strategic minerals intensifies, Coal India Limited (CIL) is actively diversifying into the critical minerals sector. This strategic shift aims to secure resources essential for India’s growing green and high-tech economy.
Manoj Kumar, chairman and managing director of CMPDI, said Coal India has initiated two critical mineral exploration projects in Madhya Pradesh. Preliminary studies suggest strong commercial viability for both mines. The move highlights India’s push to secure key minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements, vital for clean energy technologies, electronics, and defense manufacturing.
“Coal India is looking at critical minerals seriously as part of its diversification strategy. Two projects have already been taken up in Madhya Pradesh, and preliminary studies indicate both mines are commercially viable,” Kumar said.
CMPDI, the technical and planning arm of Coal India, is playing a key role in this transformation. the company is involved in domestic exploration and feasibility studies and is leading efforts to expand Coal India’s presence in the critical minerals space internationally.
According to Kumar, CMPDI’s expertise extends to collaborations with mining entities across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, providing consultancy and mine planning services.
The diversification aligns with the Indian government’s vision to reduce import dependence for critical minerals and secure long-term supplies. The focus on securing both domestic and overseas supply chains has become increasingly urgent with rising demand for EV batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, and semiconductors.
CMPDI, also preparing for an IPO by 2026, continues to drive innovation through initiatives like the National Centre for Coal and Energy research (NaCCER) and projects in carbon capture, clean coal technology, and AI-based mining.
What’s next
The strategic pivot toward critical minerals, coupled with global expansion and technological leadership, positions Coal India and CMPDI as key players in india’s resource security future, beyond just coal production.
