OMAHA, Neb. — Coastal Carolina launched its College World Series campaign with a 7-4 victory over Arizona Friday, fueled by a three-run eighth inning and a clutch performance from Dominick Carbone, who extinguished an Arizona rally in the ninth. The Chanticleers (54-11) have now won 24 straight games.
In the nightcap, Oregon State (48-14-1) delivered a 4-3 walk-off win against Louisville. Aiva arquette scored from first on Gavin Turley’s hit in the ninth.
Coastal Carolina will face Oregon State on Sunday. Arizona (44-20) will play Louisville (40-22) in an elimination game.
Against Arizona, Coastal Carolina broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth. Wells Sykes doubled, Caden Bodine was intentionally walked, and Sebastian Alexander singled to drive in the go-ahead run. Blake Barthol then doubled, plating two more.
“This is my last year of college eligibility and I’m giving it everything I’ve got for this team,” Sykes said. “I’ve got a ton of respect for my teammates and my coaches, and I think the big crowds and the loud environments are helping. We’re locked in. We’re on a crazy win streak. We’re really consistent.”
Arizona threatened in the ninth, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Carbone struck out Dom Rodriguez and induced a game-ending double play from Brendan Summerhill.
“It came down to some great two-strike hitting by them,” Wildcats coach Chip Hale said.
Earlier, Oregon State, the No.8 national seed, rallied against Louisville. The Cardinals tied the game with two runs in the top of the ninth before Arquette and Turley combined for the winning play.
“It was cool because it’s the same thing every at-bat for us – go up and compete and hit the ball hard,” Turley said.
“They took advantage of an unfortunate situation for us, just a little hiccup here or there and you get walked off in the ninth,” Cardinals coach Dan McDonnell said.
