UNITAS (Unidad de Acción Trilateral Americana) is the oldest annual multinational naval exercise in the world. Originally a trilateral exercise between the United States, Argentina, and Brazil in 1959, it has grown to include navies from across the Americas and beyond. The exercise focuses on a wide range of maritime operations, including anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, mine countermeasures, and search and rescue.
The exercise aims to improve tactical proficiency, enhance interoperability, and strengthen relationships among participating nations. It provides a valuable chance for navies to work together, share best practices, and build trust. UNITAS is sponsored by the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) and is conducted annually.

These Type 23 frigates, originally built for the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy, were acquired by Chile in the early 2000s. They are equipped with advanced sensors, weapons, and a helicopter for anti-submarine warfare.
