The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has emerged as a significant political movement in India following controversial remarks made by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. The movement has seen a rapid surge in membership and political activity in the days following the judicial comments regarding unemployed youth.
The May 15 Remarks
The controversy originated during a Supreme Court hearing on May 15, 2026. While addressing a lawyer regarding the filing of an unwarranted petition, CJI Surya Kant commented on the behavior of young, unemployed Indians who do not find employment within the legal sector. The Chief Justice noted that these individuals often turn to social media, journalism, and the filing of Right to Information (RTI) applications to attack the system.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice allegedly referred to these individuals as cockroaches.
The remarks sparked immediate backlash and catalyzed the formation of a political entity centered around the label.
Rapid Growth and Political Integration
The Cockroach Janta Party has experienced an unprecedented rise in scale since its inception. While initial reports indicated a membership of 25,000, The Times of India reported that the party’s five-point manifesto attracted 40,000 members within just two days of the movement’s debut. The party has already established a formal organizational structure, including an official election symbol and a party office.

The CJP has also made rapid inroads into established political circles. According to India Today, the party has admitted two members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) into its ranks within days of its formation.
Central to the movement is Abhijeet Dipke, whose role in organizing and leading the viral movement has been a primary focus of national reporting, including coverage by The Hindu.
