Gauff rallied after losing the first set 7-6, dominating the second 6-2, and clinching the final set 6-4. she collapsed on the court in festivity after Sabalenka’s final shot went wide.
“I don’t think either of us were playing great,” Gauff said after the match. “But I knew as soon as I stepped on to the court when I felt that it was windy that it would be one of those matches. so I was just trying to give myself the best chance and fight every point.”
Gauff reached the final after defeating fellow American Madison Keys in the quarterfinal and Lois Boisson in the semifinal. Sabalenka, who rose to world No. 1 after wins in Australia and the U.S. Open, defeated Iga Swiatek in her semifinal match.
