Code Red: Military Doctors in Disarray – The Alarming State of Emergency Room Dispatches
Government Dispatches Military Doctors to Hospitals Amid Staffing Crisis
The government has begun dispatching military doctors to hospitals struggling with staffing shortages, but the move has been met with confusion and concerns about the doctors’ suitability for emergency room work.
According to reports, three military doctors dispatched to Ewha Mokdong Hospital were deemed unsuitable for emergency room work and were asked to return. Similarly, Sejong Chungnam National University Hospital stated that military doctors cannot treat patients immediately.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare has announced plans to consult with the Ministry of National Defense and other organizations to ensure that military doctors can provide assistance in emergency rooms as quickly as possible.
250 Military Doctors Dispatched, But Hospitals Express Concerns
The Ministry of Health and Welfare has dispatched 250 military doctors to emergency rooms and other medical sites, with 15 deployed to five intensive care medical institutions in urgent need of medical personnel.
However, hospitals have expressed concerns about the suitability of military doctors for emergency room work. Ajou University Hospital, for example, has only deployed one military doctor to the anesthesiology department, while Kangwon National University Hospital has not immediately deployed military doctors for regular duty due to concerns about their residency experience.
Government Appoints Dedicated Managers to 409 Emergency Rooms
The government has decided to designate a dedicated person in charge at all emergency medical institutions to manage patients on a ‘one-on-one’ basis and prevent cases of patients not being admitted to emergency rooms.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare will designate dedicated officers for 25 hospitals where treatment may be disrupted, while the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and local governments will designate dedicated officers for the remaining 384 emergency rooms.
The government has emphasized that the emergency room is not at the level of collapse, despite difficulties in operating the emergency room.
Local Governments to Operate Emergency Medical Management Situation Teams
Local governments will operate an ‘Emergency Medical Management Situation Team’ headed by the local government head for three weeks to activate the emergency medical care system.
Local governments will establish their own emergency medical situation management and emergency medical system inspection plans, and if special situations arise, they will immediately share them with the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.
