Coffee for longevity: unlocking the Anti-aging Benefits

Updated Feb.⁢ 4, ⁤2025

That morning cup of ⁢coffee may do more than just provide⁣ a jolt of energy. A review of nearly 100 studies suggests that regular coffee consumption could significantly impact longevity and overall health.

Researchers in Portugal found that regular coffee drinkers experienced a 17% decrease in early mortality compared to ‌non-coffee drinkers. This benefit also included an average increase⁢ of almost two years of healthy living, suggesting that coffee⁣ supports both lifespan and healthspan.

The study indicated that coffee’s benefits stem from its influence on multiple biological pathways, including cardiovascular health, brain function,⁣ muscle strength, immune system support, metabolic regulation, and stress response.

These findings challenge previous health guidelines that advised older adults to limit or avoid coffee. The current research suggests ‌that moderate coffee consumption could be particularly beneficial as people age, contributing to healthy aging.

Additional research ‌supports these findings. A 2022 Australian study involving 450,000 participants revealed an even more important ‌reduction in early mortality—up to 27%—among those who drank coffee ⁤brewed from grounds. The study also noted a 20% lower risk of‍ cardiovascular issues.

Coffee contains over⁢ 2,200 natural compounds, with⁤ at least 100 actively interacting⁢ with the body. These compounds work together to protect cells from damage and slow down certain aging processes.

The European Food Safety Authority suggests that three to five cups of coffee per day, or about 400mg of caffeine, is‍ both ‌safe and‌ potentially beneficial for most adults. This amount has been linked to the most significant gains in healthy years.

It’s significant to ‍note that while the review⁢ aligns with previous research, it relied on⁤ self-reported data and received support from the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee, which is funded by major coffee companies.

What’s next

While not a fountain of youth, incorporating coffee into a⁣ daily routine may contribute to a longer, healthier life. ‍This simple habit could add both years to life and life to years.
