Coimisiún na Meán Lifts Broadcast Moratorium: New ‘Critical Election Period’ Guidelines

Coimisiún na Meán Lifts Broadcast Moratorium: New ‘Critical Election Period’ Guidelines

November 22, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Tech

The broadcasting regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, has ended the traditional broadcast moratorium for television and radio. Previously, this moratorium was in effect from 14:00 the day before polling until polls closed.

Now, it has been replaced by a “Critical Election Period.” This period will begin at 7 am on Thursday, November 28, and will last until polls close on Friday, November 29.

During the Critical Election Period, Section 10 of the guidance from the Commission requires broadcasters to exercise additional care.

The RTÉ Election Steering Group has reviewed this guidance. To learn more about RTÉ’s arrangements related to this guidance, click here.
