Colapinto’s Baku Blow: Will He Miss the Azerbaijan F1 Showdown
Franco Colapinto’s Dramatic Weekend at the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix
Franco Colapinto put in a strong performance in Baku, qualifying through to Q3 ahead of teammate Alex Albon and finishing eighth in the final. He will replace Logan Sargent at Williams for the remainder of 2024 and earned praise from three-time world champion Max Verstappen on Saturday.
However, the day before, Colapinto’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend was on the brink of collapse due to a freak accident.
“I cut my ear five minutes before FP1 while doing neck exercises,” the 21-year-old Argentine rookie revealed. “The tire came off and hit me. I lost my hearing and started bleeding.”
“Five minutes before FP1 everything opened up and they tried to sew me up,” he laughed to reporters in Baku. “I said to them: ‘What do you mean they’re going to sew me up? I have to wear a helmet!’
“Then I fell and went to the medical center, and when I took off my balaclava there was blood. They said, ‘You can’t run, can you?’
“After a little explanation we came to an agreement and we were able to run,” Colapinto laughed again.
