Stephen Colbert and Conan O’Brien Discuss the End of Late Night as we Know It
Stephen Colbert confirmed to Conan O’Brien and a live audience that CBS is not replacing him, but rather exiting the late night television game entirely under its new ownership, Paramount skydance Corporation. O’Brien, who left late night television in 2021 after 11 years on TBS, has since found success in podcasting with conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and a streaming series, Conan Must Go on HBO Max.
Both Colbert and O’Brien expressed sadness over the decline of the traditional late night format, recognizing thay are among the last of a generation of hosts. Colbert lamented the loss of a successful television form, while O’Brien, maintaining a 52% optimistic outlook, believes younger generations will find new ways to create hilarious and engaging content.
O’Brien reassured Colbert that he has nothing to worry about, suggesting that Colbert’s ability to connect with audiences isn’t limited to the late night format. He encouraged Colbert to explore new avenues, pointing to his own podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, as an exmaple of unexpected success. He believes Colbert will find new projects that bring him joy and recognition, even if they are different from his current role. O’Brien even jokingly mentioned that Al Pacino has appeared on his podcast.
