Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show,” recently lampooned President Donald Trump’s apparent lack of familiarity with the musical “Les Misérables.” The comedic jab followed Trump’s visit to the Kennedy Center and his subsequent inability to answer a straightforward question about the play’s characters.
Trump, after stating he had seen “Les Misérables” numerous times, was asked which character, Jean Valjean or Javert, he identified with moast. The president responded, ”That’s a tough one… You better answer that one, honey, I don’t know,” deferring to first lady Melania Trump.
Colbert seized on the moment, quipping, “What do you mean you don’t know? Javert is the bad guy! You just said you’ve seen the show a number of times. Is that number zero?”
Colbert then offered an option clarification for Trump’s confusion: “It is indeed possible Trump doesn’t remember who the characters are as his brain is wet bread.” He followed this with an impersonation of Trump, inventing a new character named “Lester Miserables.”
