Sci-Fi Horror Comedy ‘Cold Storage’ Arrives February 13, Starring Joe Keery and Liam Neeson
A new sci-fi horror comedy, Cold Storage, is set to release in theaters on Friday, February 13, 2026. The film, adapted from a novel by David Koepp, features a cast led by Joe Keery, Georgina Campbell, and Liam Neeson.
The film centers around a mutating fungal virus from space that threatens to escape containment. According to a review in The Hollywood Reporter, the movie has a “likeably cheesy retro vibe” and a plot involving the virus turning humanity into “moldy grenades.”
Joe Keery plays Travis, also known as Teacake, a former convict working the graveyard shift at a self-storage facility as part of his parole. He works alongside Naomi, played by Georgina Campbell, a single mother balancing her responsibilities with ambitions to attend medical school. Together, they find themselves on the front lines of defense against the potential extinction of humanity.
Liam Neeson portrays Robert Quinn, a veteran NASA bioterrorism expert brought back into service when the crisis escalates. The review notes Neeson’s character is “lumbered with a dicky lumbar,” adding a humorous element to his typically action-oriented roles.
The film reportedly opens with a scene involving Lesley Manville and Vanessa Redgrave as government agents responding to an initial outbreak, though their roles are described as “minimally important.” Sosie Bacon also stars as Dr. Hero Martins, a microbiologist who investigates the outbreak.
Cold Storage has been described as reminiscent of 1980s and 90s creature features, drawing comparisons to films like Tremors. The story begins with a reference to the 1979 Skylab incident, where debris from the space station fell to Earth, and a subsequent outbreak in a small town in Western Australia.
The virus, an iridescent green mold, is capable of adapting and infecting various species. The plot follows its journey to the United States and its containment within a Defense Security facility, which is later converted into a self-storage company.
While the film features a strong cast and a potentially engaging premise, reviews suggest the script doesn’t fully deliver on its comedic or suspenseful potential. The Hollywood Reporter describes it as “not quite infectious but not totally deadly either.” Despite this, the film is expected to find an audience upon its release to streaming platforms.
The film’s supporting cast includes Richard Brake, Aaron Heffernan, and Ellora Torchia. Jonny Campbell directed the film, based on the screenplay by David Koepp.
A review from Time Out, published January 27, 2026, awards the film 3 out of 5 stars, calling it a “fun, throwback sci-fi comedy thriller.”
