Cold Weather Payments 2024: Eligibility and Details for UK Households
Cold Weather Payments Triggered in the UK
During the recent cold snap, the first cold weather payments of 2024 have been activated as significant snowfall covers parts of the UK and temperatures drop.
Snow and Alerts
Up to 15 centimeters of snow is predicted in certain regions, prompting the Met Office to issue yellow weather alerts for snow and ice.
What are Cold Weather Payments?
The cold weather payment scheme, managed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), provides a one-time payment of £25 for every seven-day period where the temperature falls to zero degrees Celsius or below.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a cold weather payment, you must receive one of the following benefits:
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
You must also live in an area that has experienced seven consecutive days of cold temperatures. You can check your eligibility using this government tool.
Automatic Payment Process
Eligible individuals will receive payments automatically within 14 working days after the cold period. Payments will go to the bank account used for other benefit payments. If you think you should have received a payment but haven’t, contact the DWP.
