Severe Cold weather Grips Latvia

Much of Latvia is experiencing a significant cold snap, with temperatures forecast to drop well below -20°C overnight on Wednesday and into thursday morning. The latvian Surroundings, Geology and Meteorology centre (LVGMC) reports widespread freezing conditions across central and eastern regions.
Temperature Forecasts
Minimum temperatures are expected to range from -20°C to -15°C across most of the contry. Areas with prolonged clear skies may see temperatures plummet to -25°C. Coastal regions in Kurzeme and parts of Northern Vidzeme will experience comparatively milder conditions, with temperatures between -13°C and -8°C. Daytime highs will struggle to reach above -8°C to -3°C,potentially dropping to -12°C in southern areas.
Conditions in Riga
The capital city, Riga, is bracing for a especially cold night. The LVGMC forecasts a minimum temperature of around -17°C, with temperatures in the suburbs potentially reaching -22°C.Clear skies are expected, leading to fog and frost formation overnight and in the morning. Winds will be light.
Record Lows
Daugavpils recorded a temperature of -24.5°C this morning,marking the lowest temperature recorded in Latvia in the past two years. According to data from LVGMC’s observation network,the last time temperatures reached this level was in early January 2024. Last winter was notably warmer than current conditions.
Weather Outlook
While no precipitation is expected overnight, light snowfall is possible in some areas of Vidzeme during the day. Skies will be partly cloudy, with occasional sunshine. Winds will be light and easterly.
