The situation at Colo Colo is growing increasingly tense, with reports surfacing of significant discontent among players regarding the leadership of manager Fernando Ortiz. The atmosphere within the Monumental Stadium is described as a potential breaking point, according to reports from Radio ADN.

The core of the issue appears to stem from a perceived divide within the squad, with Ortiz favoring Fernando De Paul while a strained relationship exists with veteran player Arturo Vidal. Journalist Pamela Juanita Cordero reported, “Ortiz is close to Fernando De Paul, not Vidal. Vidal doesn’t believe in Ortiz, and a large part of the locker room doesn’t believe in Ortiz’s approach.”

This discontent isn’t rooted in personal conflicts, but rather a lack of faith in Ortiz’s tactical decisions. Cordero clarified, “It’s purely a sporting matter. They don’t believe in him from a footballing perspective. Not because of Vidal, but in general, the Colo Colo locker room doesn’t believe in Ortiz.”

The growing frustration has reportedly led to a loss of confidence in Ortiz’s methods, with players “assessing” the manager with each passing match. As Cordero stated, “The player assesses you as the games go by.”

The situation appears critical, with sources suggesting Ortiz’s time at Colo Colo is nearing its end. “There’s no turning back,” Cordero concluded.

Ortiz faces an immediate test this Saturday against Everton, with a poor result potentially sealing his fate. This match, scheduled for 8:30 PM local time, represents a crucial juncture for the manager’s future.

This latest development comes after a difficult period for Colo Colo, including three consecutive official defeats and a failure to qualify for international competitions at the end of 2025. The team’s struggles are compounded by recent personnel changes within the coaching staff. In November 2025, Ortiz made the decision to dismiss Daniel Díaz, the team’s GPS analyst, following a disagreement over working methods. Díaz had previously been part of Jorge Almirón’s coaching staff.

The dismissal of Díaz followed the earlier departure of goalkeeper coach Jorge Martínez, a decision made by Blanco y Negro, the club’s ownership group, while Almirón was still in charge. That decision was reportedly due to a poor relationship between Martínez and members of the squad.

Despite the recent turmoil, Blanco y Negro appears to be leaning towards retaining Ortiz for the 2026 season. According to a report from Radio ADN, members of both factions within the ownership group are generally pleased with Ortiz’s firm hand in decision-making. However, this support is contingent on avoiding a disastrous end to the current season.

A “disastrous” finish is defined as losing or drawing against La Calera, losing against Cobresal, and losing against Audax. However, even failing to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana may not necessarily result in Ortiz’s dismissal, as several members of the board are reportedly satisfied with the team’s progress under his leadership.

Adding to the challenges facing Ortiz, Colo Colo is currently dealing with injuries to key players Alexander Oroz and Óscar Opazo. Both players underwent surgery in September 2025 and are expected to be sidelined for the medium term. Oroz suffered four muscle tears in his hamstring, while Opazo had an internal meniscopathy in his left knee.

questions surrounding Ortiz’s future were already present in December 2025, following a heavy defeat against Cobresal. At that time, Pablo Guede was mentioned as a potential replacement.

The club’s ownership group had a clause in Ortiz’s contract that allowed for a review of his position at the end of 2025, assessing whether he would continue into 2026 or be subject to a severance payment. The decision was not solely tied to qualification for the Copa Sudamericana, but rather a comprehensive evaluation of the team’s performance and direction.
