Colombia Earthquake: Magnitude 6.5 Tremor Shakes Country
Updated June 08, 2025
A meaningful earthquake rattled Colombia this Sunday morning, shaking the capital city of Bogotá and surrounding areas. The Colombia earthquake, measuring 6.5 in magnitude, was centered approximately 90 kilometers east of Bogotá, along the eastern face of the Andes mountain range.
The Colombian Geological Service reported the tremor’s shallow depth—less than 30 kilometers—explaining its noticeable impact across central Colombia. The seismic activity was also felt in major cities such as Medellín and Cali.
Carlos Carrillo, director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), stated that four people sustained minor injuries in Pararatebueno and Medina. These individuals are receiving treatment at local health centers. Carrillo added that the earthquake was felt in 20 of the country’s 32 departments, with minor damage reported in Cundinamarca, Meta, and Caldas.
Power outages where initially reported in some areas, but service was quickly restored, according to Bogotá Mayor carlos fernando galán. Following the initial Colombia earthquake, the Geological Service recorded two perceptible aftershocks in Pararatebueno, with magnitudes of 4.0 and 4.6.
“We have four injured people, two in Pararatebueno and two in Medina. These people have minor injuries and are treated in local health centers,” said Carlos carrillo, director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).
Colombia’s location makes it prone to seismic activity. The country is one of the few where three tectonic plates converge: the South America plate, the Nazca plate, and the Caribbean plate. The country records an average of 50,000 earthquakes per month, though most are imperceptible.
What’s next
Authorities will continue to monitor aftershocks and assess damage in affected areas. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for potential further seismic activity.
