Colombia’s armed forces have confirmed that citizens born in 2008 will be required to perform mandatory military service, with the duration set at two and a half years and participants receiving a minimum wage stipend during their service.

The announcement, made by the Fuerzas Armadas de Colombia, reverses a previous policy that had reduced the service obligation to one year for the same cohort. Officials stated that the extension aims to strengthen national defense readiness and ensure uniform training standards across all conscripts.

Under the revised decree, individuals born in 2008 who are deemed fit for service will begin their training in 2026. The service will include basic military instruction, specialized training based on aptitude, and civic education components. Participants will receive a monthly salary equivalent to the national minimum wage, currently set at 1,300,000 Colombian pesos (approximately $320 USD).

The decision follows a period of policy fluctuation in Colombia’s military conscription system. In recent years, the duration of mandatory service has alternated between one and two years depending on annual budget allocations and defense assessments. The 2008 birth cohort was initially told in 2024 that their service would last only one year, but updated national security evaluations prompted the extension.

Exemptions apply to certain categories, including only sons in families where the father is deceased or incapacitated, individuals pursuing higher education who meet specific academic criteria, and those with documented medical conditions that prevent military training. Religious conscientious objectors may apply for alternative civilian service, though approval is subject to review by the National Recruitment Directorate.

Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the length of the service term, arguing that two and a half years represents a significant burden on young adults entering the workforce or pursuing higher education. They have urged the government to ensure transparency in the exemption process and to protect conscripts from potential abuse during training.

Government officials maintain that the extended service is necessary to address evolving security challenges, including residual risks from organized armed groups in rural regions and the need for a trained reserve force. They emphasize that the program includes vocational training components intended to improve employability after service completion.

The Fuerza Aérea, Ejército Nacional, and Armada Nacional will oversee the intake and training of the 2008 cohort through regional recruitment centers. Officials estimate that approximately 350,000 individuals from this age group will be eligible for conscription, though the actual number called to serve will depend on medical evaluations, educational deferments, and available training capacity.

As of April 2026, the National Government has not announced any further changes to the military service law. The next review of conscription policy is scheduled for late 2026, coinciding with the annual defense budget deliberations in the Colombian Congress.
