Colombia has raised the alert level for the Puracé volcano from yellow to orange following a record surge in seismic activity and volcanic gas emissions, according to the Colombian Geological Survey. Authorities warned that the heightened activity increases the risk of a major eruption at the volcano, located in the southwestern department of Cauca.

The alert status shift was announced on August 1, 2026, by the Colombian Geological Survey, known locally as the SGC. According to Nathalia Contreras, technical director of geohazards at the agency, the orange alert reflects a greater likelihood of a major eruption compared to smaller volcanic events recorded in recent weeks. Contreras noted that while an eruption is more probable, the orange status does not mean an eruption is guaranteed.

Although we do not know whether it will happen, we must be prepared.

Volcanic Activity and Monitoring Parameters

Scientific monitoring indicates that volcanic activity has intensified continuously since July 20, 2026. The SGC reports significant changes in multiple monitored parameters, including persistent ground deformation, higher emission temperatures, and elevated levels of seismic energy.

Data from the Popayán Volcanological and Seismological Observatory shows that dense columns of gas and ash have risen up to 3,400 meters above the summit. These emissions contain high concentrations of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. Jaime Raigosa, coordinator of the regional observatory, stated that sudden emissions of pyroclastic material and toxic gases pose a direct threat to life. The SGC said seismic energy and gas and ash emissions have reached their highest levels since official monitoring of the volcano began.

Geographic Context and Public Safety Directives

The Puracé volcano is part of the Los Coconucos volcanic chain and sits approximately 27 kilometers from the city of Popayán. Although its last significant eruption occurred in March 1977, the volcanic complex has exhibited gradual signs of reactivation since 2021.

In response to the orange alert, regional authorities and the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management have issued direct warnings to residents and visitors. Officials have urged the public to stay away from the crater areas of the Puracé, Piocollo, and Curiquinga volcanoes. Jaime Raigosa warned that sudden emissions of toxic gases and pyroclastic material pose a direct threat to life in the upper zones. Communities have been advised to rely solely on official channels from the SGC and the National Disaster Risk Management System for updates.
