Álvaro Uribe Vélez, the defining figure of the Colombian right for the past quarter-century, is facing a critical juncture as legal challenges mount against him. His recent house arrest, pending appeal, has ignited accusations of political persecution and raised questions about the future direction of the conservative movement in Colombia. This comes at a time when the right is grappling with internal divisions and the rise of anti-establishment sentiment.

A Controversial Ruling and Claims of Political Persecution

Uribe, life president of the Democratic Center party, vehemently denounced the judge’s decision to impose house arrest as a politically motivated attempt to silence the opposition.”They want to destroy a voice of the democratic opposition,” he stated, echoing a sentiment shared by his supporters. The decision, made without waiting for the appeal process has fueled accusations of judicial overreach and intensified the perception of a targeted campaign against uribe and his allies.

His son, Jerónimo Uribe, now acting as a key spokesperson for the most ardent Uribistas, argued that “indiscriminate legal maneuvers have been undertaken to stop [Álvaro Uribe] and criminalize his family and his surroundings.” While the defense hopes the case will be dismissed due to statute of limitations, the proceedings have cast a shadow over the party and its future prospects.

The absence of a Key Figure: Uribe Turbay and the Shifting Landscape

The legal battles coincide with the absence of Uribe Turbay, the former senator and grandson of another Colombian president, who was a prominent voice for Uribismo in Congress. Uribe Turbay’s rise to prominence was directly facilitated by Álvaro Uribe Vélez, who secured his position as the party’s lead candidate for the Senate in 2022, despite not being a long-standing party member. he proved a loyal and effective advocate for Uribismo, consistently opposing the leftist government of Gustavo Petro and positioning himself as a potential presidential candidate.Uribe Turbay had openly stated his campaign strategy would be dictated by Álvaro Uribe Vélez, aiming to consolidate the right-wing vote around his mentor. His absence leaves a void within the Democratic Center and raises questions about whether that strategy remains viable.

The Appeal of the Anti-political Flag

The current situation has opened space for alternative voices on the right, notably those embracing an anti-establishment message. Vicky Dávila, for example, has repeatedly rejected collaboration with traditional “politicians.” This strategy mirrors the success of Rodolfo Hernández in the 2022 presidential election, where he unexpectedly gained traction by positioning himself as an outsider challenging the political status quo.

Uribismo, initially presenting elements of right-wing insurgency akin to the American Tea Party movement in 2013, has evolved into a more traditional political party, a transformation solidified during the presidency of Iván Duque. This makes it challenging for the Democratic Center to effectively occupy the anti-political space.

Beyond the Democratic Center: A New Wave of Anti-System Sentiment?

While figures like María Fernanda cabal and Paola Holguín within Uribismo may have more freedom to adopt an anti-political rhetoric in the wake of Uribe Turbay’s absence, the broader question remains: can the Colombian right successfully capitalize on the growing discontent with traditional politics?

The recent political trends in Argentina and El Salvador, where anti-system candidates have achieved significant victories, suggest a potential for similar outcomes in Colombia. Compounding the challenges facing the traditional right are concerning events like the murder of Uribista figures and the conviction of its leader, possibly fueling further anti-establishment sentiment and opening the door for a new wave of right-wing populism. The future of the Colombian right hinges on its ability to adapt to this evolving political landscape and address the underlying frustrations driving voters towards alternative options.
