Colorectal cancer in Mexico now ranks among the country’s most frequent malignancies, registering approximately 15,000 new cases annually according to data from the Secretaría de Salud, while medical specialists warn that the disease increasingly affects younger populations.

During a medical forum held in Panama, experts discussed how colorectal cancer no longer concentrates exclusively in individuals over 50 years old, according to El Tiempo. Juan Antonio Delgado Vázquez, a surgical oncologist at Hospital Ángeles Andares in Guadalajara, explained that physicians now observe an increase in cases around the fourth decade of life. The procedure allows physicians to identify and remove polyps, which serve as precursor lesions for colorectal cancer. Technological updates, including artificial intelligence tools, can increase polyp detection rates—particularly for flat or embedded lesions—by 25 to 30 percent, according to Delgado Vázquez’s statements cited by El Tiempo.

Specialists advise that screening should begin at age 45, particularly for individuals carrying risk factors, and urge patients experiencing persistent symptoms—which can sometimes mimic conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or colitis—to seek professional medical evaluation rather than turning to self-medication.
