Texas Library Ordered‍ to Return Wampanoag History Book to Nonfiction Section

A ⁣Texas judge has ⁣ruled that ‍a history book detailing the Wampanoag tribe’s experience with European colonization must be ⁢returned to‍ the nonfiction section of a montgomery County library. The book, Colonization and the ⁣Wampanoag Story,‍ was moved to the fiction section earlier this year ‍following complaints from an anonymous library cardholder.

The decision sparked outrage among many, including ⁣Wampanoag historian and author Linda Coombs, who penned the book for middle school readers. Coombs argues that ⁣the recategorization is part of a larger pattern of erasing⁣ the Wampanoag people’s history.”This isn’t just about ⁢one book,” Coombs said. “It’s about the⁢ ongoing struggle to have our voices heard and our history accurately represented.”

Crown Books for Young Readers

Colonization and the Wampanoag Story details the tribe’s first encounters with English settlers in the early 17th ⁤century, a period marked by devastating disease outbreaks that decimated the Wampanoag population.

The judge’s ruling is a victory for those who believe in the importance of accurate historical depiction. It also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous ⁢communities in having their⁣ stories told and their voices heard.

“This is a step in the right direction,” Coombs said. “But the fight for recognition and justice is far from over.”
