Colruyt Refuses to Stock Douwe Egberts Coffee Due to Price Hike
Coffee Prices Brew Up a Storm: Supermarkets Clash with Brands Over Rising Costs
American shoppers may soon face higher coffee prices as a battle brews between major supermarket chains and coffee brands over soaring costs.
Delhaize, a prominent grocery retailer, confirmed that negotiations with some coffee brands have been particularly challenging this year. “Some suppliers are seeking price increases that exceed the average,” said spokesperson Roel Dekelver, hinting at a growing tension over pricing.
This conflict comes as coffee bean prices continue their upward climb, reaching record highs on commodity markets this week. JDE Peet’s, a leading coffee company, had already requested a significant price hike from another major supermarket chain, Colruyt, earlier this summer. Colruyt, which owns its own roasting facility and Graindor, its private label coffee brand, ultimately agreed to the increase due to the sharp rise in coffee prices driven by poor harvests.
Though, Colruyt is now pushing back against JDE Peet’s latest demand for a substantial price increase. ”We don’t believe the significant price increase requested by Jacobs Douwe Egberts today is justified,” stated Hanne Poppe, a spokesperson for Colruyt.
The price surge is fueled by a series of unfortunate events impacting coffee production. Major coffee-producing nations like Brazil and Vietnam have revised their harvest forecasts downward this week. Throughout the year, these countries have grappled with extreme weather conditions, including severe droughts and powerful typhoons, substantially affecting coffee bean yields.
Coffee Prices Percolate into a Supermarket Showdown
NewsDirectory3.com – A brewing battle over rising coffee prices is pitting supermarkets against major coffee brands, threatening to drive up costs for cappuccino-craving consumers.
Grocery giant Delhaize acknowledges the tense negotiations with coffee suppliers. “Some suppliers are seeking price increases that exceed the average,” says spokesperson Roel Dekelver, hinting at a widening rift over soaring costs.
The conflict stems from a perfect storm of factors driving up coffee bean prices to record highs. Major producers like Brazil and Vietnam have slashed harvest forecasts due to devastating droughts and typhoons. This has emboldened coffee companies like JDE Peet’s to demand steep price hikes from retailers.
Earlier this year, JDE Peet’s successfully negotiated a price increase with another major chain, Colruyt. However, Colruyt, which roasts its own coffee and sells its private label Graindor brand, is now resisting JDE Peet’s latest demand for another considerable increase.
“We don’t believe the meaningful price increase requested by Jacobs Douwe Egberts today is justified,” asserts spokesperson Hanne Poppe.
The ongoing saga leaves American shoppers caught in the crosshairs, perhaps facing a bitter reality: a hefty price tag on their next cup of joe.
