Columbia University Faces Scrutiny Over Antisemitism Allegations
Updated june 04, 2025
The U.S. Department of Education has escalated its conflict with Columbia University, asserting the institution may not meet accreditation standards. The department cites inadequate protection of Jewish students from harassment as the primary reason for the increased scrutiny and potential violation of Title VI Civil Rights Act.
Linda McMahon, U.S. Secretary of Education, stated Wednesday that Columbia University’s leadership showed ”purposeful indifference” toward the harassment of Jewish students following the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel. The department has notified the Middle States Commission on Higher Education of the alleged violation.
The department claims Columbia University no longer satisfies the commission’s accreditation requirements. Accreditation is essential for students to access federal funding, including grants and loans.
A Columbia University representative said the university views the findings as part of its ongoing collaboration with the government to address antisemitism on campus. The increased scrutiny is part of the federal government’s Joint Task force to Combat Anti-Semitism initiatives.
“After Hamas’ October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel, Columbia University’s leadership acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students on its campus,” McMahon said.
In March, Columbia implemented policy changes after the governance threatened to withdraw $400 million in grants and contracts over alleged insufficient action against campus antisemitism. Other leading U.S. universities also face pressure from the administration to implement policy changes or risk losing federal support regarding antisemitism and progressive prejudice.
What’s next
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education acknowledged receipt of the Education Department’s letter and will review the allegations. The commission is expected to keep the department informed of its actions to ensure Columbia’s compliance with accreditation standards and federal civil rights laws. The examination into antisemitism on college campuses continues.
